Vorals

2011-2021

From a moving car, there’s a strip of landscape you only catch out of the corner of your eye: the one that slides past the roadside while you’re heading somewhere else. Vorals began with stopping in that strip —ten years, between 2011 and 2021, crossing back and forth across the Catalan geography— and photographing, almost always in a single visit, what is normally only passed through.

It is not only a geographic margin. It is also a mental one, that of a Catalonia I recognize from childhood and that no longer exists: displaced by the modernization of infrastructure, by the flattening of a commercial landscape made of franchises and disposable construction. I’m not looking for ruin here, nor for a nostalgic gesture, but rather the record of a substitution still underway, still visible in its last fragments.
